Torah Scribe Demonstration and Fundraiser

aleph The Education Committee plans a special program for children and adults featuring sofer (Torah scribe) Jay Greenspan who will lead an interactive presentation on the art of writing and repairing Torah scrolls and other sacred texts. Greenspan is artist-in-residence at the Abraham Joshua Heschel School in New York City and is the author of Hebrew Calligraphy: A Step-by-Step Guide (NY: Schocken Books, 1981). He is an experienced calligrapher and paper cutting artist who has led numerous educational programs for all ages.

There will be two sessions on Sunday, February 7: one for children aged 5-8 and their parents from 10-10:20am, and one for adults and older children from 11-11:45. Both are free and open to the public.

The educational workshops will be followed by a special "Ink a Letter" program at 12:00 p.m. Many of the letters on our Torah scrolls are faded and need re-inking. During this activity, participants assist the scribe in inking one or more letters on one of the shul's Torah scrolls. This part of the program is intended as a fundraiser for Temple B'nai Brith. Suggested donation: $18 per letter.

This is a truly amazing and religiously meaningful experience. All ages are welcome!

Tea and Torah

tea Tea and Torah, our Torah-study tea-party, has moved to a new day. We now meet monthly on the third Saturday of the month at 5:00pm. In the coming months, we'll be discussing the following Torah portions:
  •  Feb 20 – Tetzaveh
  •  Mar 20 – Tzav
  •  Apr 17 – Achrei mot/Kedoshim
  •  May 15 – Naso
That's right! You can now see Shabbat off with us. We will be drinking tea (truth in advertising) and discussing the weekly portion as well as whatever other Jewishy topics are on our minds. During the winter months when Shabbat is over early, we will begin with Havdalah, and towards spring we will end with Havdalah. One way or another, there will be tea. There will be Torah. We hope there will be you, too.

Israeli Folk Dancing

Israeli Dancing Israeli dancing continues, two Sundays a month, from 7:00–9:00 pm. Please come and enjoy the spirit-lifting music and exercise. We do a mix of easy and intermediate dances, taught and reviewed by Raphael Gottesman, and newcomers are always welcome. The program is geared for adults (teens and older).

Our dance session scheduled for January 31 is canceled, but we'll look forward to dancing with you again on February 7 and 21, and March 14 and 28. Planned dates do change from time to time, so if you're not already on the dance email list, please sign up here. Suggested donation: $3 for adults, $2 students. Please bring soft-soled shoes to protect the floor.
