Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
(Isaiah 58:7-8)
Immigrant Justice
Therefore, love the stranger: for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
(Deuteronomy 10:19)
A TBB team has been assisting an Afghan family to resettle here in Somerville.
Our past endeavors include partnering with people who needed help with the immigration system and defending their right to live in dignity and safety. TBB was an early signatory to “Welcoming Massachusetts” in 2007.
We have worked with the Welcome Project in Somerville and the Boston Immigration Justice Accompaniment Network (BIJAN) to support new immigrants by accompanying people to court appearances, giving rides, providing translations and other assistance.
If you are willing and able to provide such assistance, please contact socialaction@templebnaibrith.org.
Save Our Homes Walk
If there is a poor person among you ... do not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your needy fellow, but open your hand
and lend them sufficient for their need.
(Deuteronomy 15: 7,8)
Many TBB members, including parents and children from the Children’s School, join the annual Save Our Homes Walk, sponsored by the Somerville Save Our Homes Coalition, to raise emergency funds to keep people in their homes, able to keep their jobs, and keep kids in school. Each year, the walk raises money to help more than 100 Somerville residents avoid the devastation of homelessness.
Community Cooks
Whoever is in need, let that person come and eat.
(Ta’anit 20b)
Community Cooks in Somerville provides nourishing meals to a partner agency and the Temple B’nai Brith Community Cooks team is proud to support these efforts. Once a month, members of the team take turns to provide a full after-school lunch to the Welcome Project’s L.I.P.S. (Liaison Interpreter) program, which empowers bilingual youth to become interpreters and community advocates.
